Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin. Results can include improved texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.
How does micro needling work?
Micro-Needling, as the name implies, uses ultra fine needles to create micro channels, or tiny holes, in the skin. The process stimulates the skin’s natural ability to heal itself by producing collagen and elastin. The repair process begins almost immediately, and final results can provide thicker skin and softened wrinkles and scars.
The Micro-Needling tool contains sterile, disposable micro-needles that are gently glided across the area being treated, creating micro-channels of controlled “injury.” This injury stimulates the production of the skin’s own repairing collagen and increases absorption of the skin care products applied as part of the procedure.
What and how does the microneedling procedure feel like?
The Micro-Needling device’s high-speed motor causes needle penetration to occur really quickly, feeling more like a sandpaper sensation than needle sticks. Depending on the areas being treated and the depth of needle penetration, patients may experience stronger sensation. Micro-Needling is most often performed after a numbing cream has been applied to reduce or eliminate any possible discomfort or pain. The process is safe, non invasive, heat free and painless.
Selected areas for micro-needling
- Body (including fragile skin)
Micro-needling can even treat those highly sensitive areas not proper for peeling or laser resurfacing techniques like:
- Around the eyes
The microneedling procedure
Most commonly used is a device called the SkinPen, which a handheld battery-powered pen which contains 12-tiny needle, sterile cartridges for the injections. The needles are implemented by predetermined depths for piercing the skin. The pen is transferred quickly and efficiently across your skin- unlike more traditional injectables. Treatments may take up somewhere between 10 to 15 minutes.
Micro needling is best used to treat the following skin conditions:
- Sluggish skin
- Acne Scarring (usually combined with laser for prominent scarring)
- Trauma Scars
- Accumulated photo damage wrinkles and roughness
Micro-needling is not painful
Micro needling may be slightly uncomfortable with depths needed for scar revision, but level of discomfort is managed extremely easy with topical numbing gel applied directly to the surface of the skin prior to beginning. Lighter treatments have been typically compared to a similar feeling as if brushing sandpaper across the skin.
How quickly will micro needling work?
Micro needling is not necessarily considered an aggressive treatment. It may require several treatments over the course of a 3 to 6 month period for the desired, expected results. Results are cumulative. A commitment to more than one treatment is suggested for optimal outcomes.
Recovery of skin post treatment:
Light treatment levels:
- May feel as though your skin is warm or hot – and sensitive.
- Light superficial treatments leave the skin red for a day or two.
More progressive levels:
- Treatments aimed at changing the skin at deeper planes as in acne scarring may experience some swelling, pinpoint bleeding (stops almost immediately) and what is called “bronzing” as the tiny pinpoints dry and then slough off.
- Skin may also feel tight.
- Skin will be more sun and product sensitive.
- Gentle washes to avoid discomfort.
- Don’t “pick” at any areas that feel like sand granules to avoid potential damage.
Microneedling is the next generation of aesthetic treatments that induce collagen naturally within the skin. It activates a natural wound-healing of the skin by stimulating epidermal growth factors as well as fibroblasts. This encourages the natural production of collagen to address fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and stretch marks while improving skin texture, tone, and firmness. This non-invasive treatment creates microscopic channels within the epidermis, increasing the depth of transdermal penetration and allowing the absorption of various vital skin-specific nutrients to improve and correct a wide range of skin concerns on all skin types and ethnicities with long-term visible results.
