4 Reasons Behind Your Double Chin
If you have a double chin, chances are that you’re not very happy about it. After all, we live in a very image-conscious society where we feel the need to put our best face forward. It’s very hard to do that when you’re extremely self-conscious.
There are several reasons why you might develop a double chin, but you can get rid of it with a treatment called Kybella®. Our providers at eleven19 MedSpa explain more about both the causes of a double chin and how Kybella works to treat it.
The causes of a double chin
A double chin is just extra fat under your chin, called submental fat. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re overweight or obese, though. You can have a double chin even if you’re at a normal weight. The four main reasons behind your double chin are:
Excess weight
Although we stated above that it’s possible to have a double chin without being overweight or obese — which is still true — the fact remains that most cases are due to carrying excess weight all over your body.
Age
Every part of your body starts to be affected by gravity over time, including your chin. Your skin also loses elasticity, which makes it more likely to develop a double chin.
Genetics
If you have less elasticity in your skin or other family members have the same issue, you are more likely to have a double chin.
Posture
How you stand and sit can lead to a double chin. This happens because when you slouch or slump, it causes the skin on your neck to look bigger than it actually is.
There are many factors that can contribute to developing a double chin. Unfortunately, only some of them are controllable. But you can do something about it, which we explain below.
How to fix the problem
Although there are several types of facial exercises that can reduce the size of your double chin, they usually aren’t very effective at providing the kind of results that Kybella can.
We inject this FDA-approved substance into the submental fat. The substance is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule that your body produces. This acid dissolves the fat.
The process usually takes 15-20 minutes, but we must repeat it multiple times. The average is at least two treatments, each spaced a week apart, but you may need up to six treatments. Your provider determines the number of treatments that you need.
